Today’s post is short, but I hope you’ll agree that it is very sweet. My nephew Harry recently turned 8 years old, and we threw him a colourful Mexican-style fiesta to celebrate!
We kept things simple and easy: Most of the decorations came from Partyrama, where we found paper bunting, plates and cups, and those glorious fold-out sombrero centrepieces. The Mexican Fiesta bottle bubbles were also a huge hit with Harry and his guests and they looked lovely dotted about everywhere. The Frida Kahlo ornament added a some extra Mexican flair (mostly appreciated by the adults!). If you want something similar, there is a surprising amount of Frida themed handmade loveliness on Etsy.
Now, onto the food! We made delicious pulled chicken tacos which were enthusiastically devoured, and thus concluded that tacos are the Holy Grail of small-boy-party-food! Finally, it wouldn’t be a birthday party without a cake, and what a cake it was: A towering homemade sombrero cake decorated with abundant icing and licorice allsort ‘jewels’. It was enormous, and delicious. The boys spent the afternoon in a delighted frenzy of sugar and joy, playing games in their Lucha Libre masks.
We had a wonderful time putting together the party, and Harry and his friends had a whale of a time. This theme could easily be adapted for a more grown up borthday party with the addition of a few potted cacti and a round of margaritas. What are you waiting for? Arriba!
